JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Capitol is being added to the state's Freedom Trail on July 29.

The trail is a series of historical markers honoring people and places of the civil rights movement.

The "Capitol Rally" marker will be placed on the north side of the building. It commemorates James Meredith's 1966 "March Against Fear," which began in Memphis, Tennessee, and ended at the Mississippi Capitol.

When Meredith was shot and wounded in Hernando on the second day of his march, other civil rights leaders — including Stokely Carmichael and Floyd McKissick — continued the journey. Large rallies were held along the way in Greenwood, Philadelphia and Canton.

The march ended at the Capitol on June 26, 1966, with a crowd estimated at 15,000.
