Why does your district need you right now?

The needs are the same as in most of Mississippi: quality public education, access to health care, improved infrastructure (streets, water), safe neighborhoods, and economic growth.

Provide one or two examples of when you have been an advocate for your district in your personal or professional life. What was the result?

In the Senate, I led the effort to locate state agencies in the Capitol area to save state taxpayers money and speed up development in Jackson. I have also fought for fair water bills for all the citizens of Byram, and helped secure funds for the new library in Terry. As a parent, I have been actively involved in Parents for Public Schools and Jackson PTA to improve our public schools.

In the past year or so, what was the most important vote taken for your district? How would you have voted and why? What is the most pressing issue for your district?

Two important votes in the past legislative session: I voted to expand Medicaid to improve access to health care and support our local hospitals (cover unreimbursed treatment costs) and to oppose irresponsible tax cuts before we meet our obligations to fund our public schools and colleges (who continue to raise tuition to make up for loss of state funds) and maintain public infrastructure. I believe state government needs to do its part to help create a vibrant capital city.

If you could propose piece of legislation that would greatly improve the quality of life for people in your district what would it be?

One change in state law that would benefit Jackson and Byram (and all other municipalities): To direct a portion of state funds collected for highway maintenance to cities for street repair.

If you are unsuccessful in winning your race, how specifically will you continue working on behalf of your district?

Regardless of the outcome of the election, I will continue to be involved in the community and public policy issues as a parent, businessperson, and leader in the Democratic Party.
