JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Senate has ended its part of the 2015 legislative session.

Senators wrapped up their work Wednesday and went home a few days before the three-month gathering was scheduled to end.

It was not immediately clear whether the House would also leave Wednesday. A bill was held for the possibility of more debate in the House, which could bring representatives back to the Capitol on Thursday.

During the session, lawmakers wrote a nearly $6.3 billion budget and approved borrowing $450 million for a variety of projects, including $24.5 million for an aquarium in Gulfport.

Republican leaders pushed for tax cuts, but those efforts were defeated by House Democrats who argued the state needs to hold onto money for education, transportation and other services.
