Nov. 4 Election Set to Fill Brown's Senate Seat

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant has set a Nov. 4 special election to fill a legislative vacancy caused by the death of longtime state Sen. Terry Brown.

The special election will be in Senate District 17, which is entirely in Lowndes County.

Candidates have an Oct. 6 deadline to qualify for the nonpartisan election.

If a runoff is needed, it will be Nov. 25. The new senator will fill the remainder of a four-year term that ends in January 2016.

Brown died Sept. 4 after undergoing treatment for lung cancer. The Republican had held the District 17 Senate seat since 2004. He also served in the Mississippi House from 1988 to 2000.
