Winter to be Feted on 90th Birthday

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Former Gov. William Winter will be honored on his 90th birthday Tuesday and for his public service during a symposium at the old Capitol Museum in Jackson.

The symposium, sponsored by Jones Walker law firm, will consist of a panel discussion on The Future of Mississippi and the South in the House of Representatives Chamber of the Old Capitol Museum.

Panelists will include industrialist and business leader Jim Barksdale; Tougaloo College President Beverly Wade Hogan; Charles Overby, former chairman of the Newseum in Washington, D.C.; and Jesse White, former chairman of the Southern Growth Policies Board.

Winter was governor from 1980-1984. Winter persuaded recalcitrant lawmakers to pass the Education Reform Act of 1982. Since then, he has worked as an attorney and advocate for improving education and racial reconciliation.
