Ricardo A. Brown

On July 1, Jackson State University named Ricardo A. Brown, a cardiovascular physiologist and biomedical research expert, dean of the College of Public Service.

Brown received a bachelor's degree in biology from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala., and later earned a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

At Howard, Brown went on to serve as associate vice president for sponsored programs, and a professor of physiology and biophysics. He acted as the main signing agent for grant contracts and corporate agreements for the university, and ensured that faculty and staff complied with federal, state and local regulations.

Brown later became assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs for the University of Maryland, where he emphasized increasing the university's minority population and created new education and career paths in science, technology, engineering and health.

In addition to his duties at Jackson State, Brown is president and CEO of RAB Associates, LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting company that handles grants, program and project management, evaluation, and other services.

Brown's has done extensively published research on the cardiovascular effects of alcohol consumption. He spent six years serving as the health scientist administrator and minority health and health disparities coordinator for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The National Institutes of Health awarded Brown its Employee Performance Award and the Director's Award for Exemplary Service. Brown has directed a number of programs dedicated to increasing minority student participation in biomedical sciences, medicine and STEM programs.
