The Bachelorettes were a fixture in the Jackson music scene with their '60s-inspired girl-pop sound and their trademark wigs from 2008 to 2010. Now, two years after some members moved to Missouri and Louisiana, The Bachelorettes are coming together for a reunion concert March 31 at the Commons at Eudora Welty's Birthplace. The concert will also be part of the bachelorette party for band member Rachel Jarmon.

The Bachelorettes are drummer Amanda Rainey, 27; guitarist Lizzie Wright, 29; bassist Annie Blazer, 33; and vocalist Rachel Jarmon, 25.

Groups such as The Supremes, The Shangri-Las, The Dixie Cups and Molly Page shaped The Bachelorettes' sound, which gave '60s girl-pop a revival here. The Bachelorettes perform songs that reference places and life in Jackson. The lyrics for "Girl in the Band" are about seeing guys at McDade's Market. "Facebook Folly" is about Facebook-stalking a guy the speaker met at Martin's Restaurant & Bar, and "Not a Jew" is based on the real-life struggle of some of the band members' Jewish families telling them they would not find good Jewish boys in Jackson to marry. (Although Jarmon is not marrying Jewish.)

Unfortunately, in 2010, the band decided to call it quits to pursue career opportunities in other cities. However, Rainey said everyone is excited about reuniting and that the show is a "real chance for guys to finally be invited to a bachelorette party." Rainey promised that despite the fact that the band has not played or rehearsed together in nearly two years, there will be several surprises in the show to celebrate Jarmon's engagement.

"This is going to be a one-of-a-kind event, and we are encouraging everyone to wear wigs and costumes," Rainey says about the reunion.

"Because seriously, how often are guys invited to bachelorette parties?"

Proceeds for the show will benefit the St. Dominic Cancer Center's wig program. The show, which is open to the public, is free for those who donates a wig, with all other admission $5. To hear The Bachelorettes, visit http://www.myspace.com/thebachelorettesband.
