With Pressure On, JSU Releases Statement About Henderson Shooting

The statement, verbatim:

Amid allegations that JSU football players may have killed Nolan Ryan Henderson last weekend, as I blogged about this morning, Jackson State University just released a statement calling for information about the shooting. No one from JSU is speaking directly to the press about the latest allegations, which have taken social media by storm today (#justiceforryan on Twitter), but they released a statement that did not address the football-player allegations, which Henderson's brother, Damien, is passing around via social media, along with other friends and family, suggesting that JSU has not acted quickly enough to identify the killers. The statement is below, verbatim, and comes after the Henderson family met with JSU administration including Dr. Carolyn Meyers this afternoon at Jackson State. It's also interesting to note that Henderson's mother had agreed to go on JSU's TV-23 tonight with a JSU representative, but then backed out, saying that she plans to sue the university. This information came from Brad "Kamikaze" Franklin, the host of the program who is also a columnist for the Jackson Free Press.

JSU President and Henderson family urge cooperation in shooting investigation

(JACKSON, Miss.) – Jackson State University President Carolyn W. Meyers and university officials urge that anyone with information about the off-campus March 25 shooting death of JSU student Nolan Ryan Henderson call the Jackson Police Department (JPD) immediately at 601-960-1234.

"The Jackson Police Department is leading the investigation in this case," President Meyers said. "All information that campus police receive is forwarded directly to the Jackson Police Department."

President Meyers met this afternoon, March 27, with the family of Henderson, who was shot off campus at the Palisades Apartments in Jackson.

"This is the time to step forward," President Meyers said. "We need to do whatever we can to help the Henderson family and the Jackson State family. We are all grieving."

The JSU campus police will continue to support the JPD investigation, including transporting students to the Jackson Police Department for voluntary interviews.

Students may report information by name or anonymously via the red flag system on the JSU homepage (https://report.myredflag.com/reporter/login/school/jsu) or by calling JPD at 601-960-1234. All information obtained by JSU campus police will be forwarded to JPD.

Following the shooting, JSU officials increased security on campus, bringing in additional officers to patrol its campus. JSU officials ask that students be prepared to show official university identification when requested.

Counselors and campus ministers will continue grief counseling services from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 28 and 29 in the Meditation Room of Student Center. To schedule an appointment for individual counseling, call 601-979-0374.

Jackson State University will broadcast a video statement from President Meyers this evening at http://www.jsums.edu.

The Jackson Free Press is also investigating this case. Reach out to [e-mail missing] or call 601-362-6121 ext. 12 if you have information. We can protect your identity.

Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. just sent a statement about the Henderson case: "Our hearts go out to the family of Ryan Henderson. This was a senseless act of violence that was perpetrated against this young man, and the Jackson Police Department will pursue every avenue to ensure the individuals responsible are brought to justice."

The Clarion-Ledger is reporting that a cousin of Henderson said police told him earlier that a friend of Ryan Henderson brought the gun to the party. This is NOT confirmed just as the accusations of football players are not confirmed. If you have information, please write [email protected] or call 601-362-6121 ext. 12!
