Jackson State University will hold a vigil this evening to remember one of its students who was killed over the weekend.

Jackson State University plans to hold a candlelight vigil this evening in honor of a freshman who was killed in a shooting over the weekend.

Nolan Ryan Henderson III, 19, was killed off campus in the early hours of Sunday morning shortly after a shooting at Mississippi State University claimed the life of a student at that school, John Sanderson, 21, of Madison.

Hank Bounds, commissioner of higher education, said in a statement that both universities are working with law enforcement to solve the crimes.

"The unfulfilled promise of a young person's life cut short is always heartbreaking," Bounds said in the statement. "... These are both senseless tragedies and our sympathies go out to each of their families."

The vigil at JSU will take place at 7 p.m. on the Gibbs-Green Pedestrian Walkway, near the Jacob Reddix Building at the university. Call 601-979-0374 for more information.
