Art Remix, ‘Latinized'

At Art Remix, musicians will take the C Spire Stage in the Art Garden.

Lawn chairs? Check. Blankets? Check. Most importantly, your dancing shoes? Make sure you have these items when heading downtown to Art Remix at the Mississippi Museum of Art. Although you might think a museum is an odd place for nightlife aimed at everyone from children and teens to adults and grandparents, the art museum strives to correct that misconception with several events on their summer roster.

Art Remix, which combines impressive art live music both local and national, is in its fourth year at the museum; this is the first year it will take place in the outdoor Art Garden.

Headlining the event is Latinismo, Jackson's premiere Latin band. The 11-member band features diverse instruments such as drums, trombones, trumpets, congas and keyboards, all of which combine to get you out of your seat and dance. Latinismo specializes in traditional Latin music, as well as the ability to "Latinize" any type of music––like mixing Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" with the cha cha cha, a genre of Cuban music, to create a powerful upbeat dance song.

"We take popular music and put a different Caribbean or Latin sound to it," percussionist Jesus Velazquez says. "This is a chance to have fun with music, and we tend to please everyone."

Art Remix also features opening act Lisa Mills, from Glastonbury, England, whose sound resembles the late Janis Joplin. Her smooth, sultry voice will have you swaying under the stars.

The fourth annual Art Remix is Friday, June 8, at Mississippi Museum of Art (380 S. Lamar St.) starting at 7.p.m.. Admission is free. No outside food or drink allowed. The Palette Café will provide grilled food starting at $5 and a cash bar. For more information, call 601-960-1515 or visit http://www.msmuseumart.org. Jackson Free Press is a sponsor.
