12 Dead in Colo. Shooting

photo

Google Map of the Denver, Colo., metro area.

James Holmes, 24, opened fire in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater overnight, killing 12 people and injuring 39 others.

Holmes has been identified as a white American male. The shooting took place early Friday morning at a premiere for the Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

President Barack Obama said he was "shocked and saddened" by the tragedy. Obama canceled a Florida campaign event and said that he would address the nation later this morning.

The story is developing. Check back for updates.

An unspeakable act, indeed. My thoughts go out to the victims and their families.

I've read accounts elsewhere that the suspect is not believed to be connected to any terrorist groups. That's not important to me because I think he's a terrorist. If he were a Muslim, how quickly would the media label him as such?

Awful. And he was a former med student, and booby-trapped his apartment.

I remember being a journalist in Colorado during Columbine and covering a silent march of families and children around a hotel in downtown Denver where the NRA was having their convention.

And here we are again.

He didn't have a record; it will be interesting to find out where he got his arsenal.

I actually thought about the NRA after I got word of the shootings this morning. They have a strange tendency of showing up at places after a mass shooting spree.

Donna- an arsenal is a building where weapons and ammunition are stored, repaired, built and issued to authorized users. Haven't seen any reports he owned a firearms business.

Two things.

(1.) http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictio...">http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictio... b : a collection of weapons

(2.) Seriously? You typed that? Today? There's a time and a season to demand your version of "political correctness" on gun terminology. This is not that time; not that season.

Reports are he purchased his firearms at Cableas and Bass Pro.

Todd- No one refers to a gun collection or 4 guns as an arsenal except the the media when they want to sensationlize an event.

Bubba, the media didn't sensationalize this event.

The killer did.

He used (reportedly) an AR-15 assault rifle with a high-capacity clip, two .40 caliber glocks, tear gas and who knows what else, and he wasn't defending his house or his castle or his goddam rights.

He was killing kids, and vets, and innocents, and wounding a ton of others.

And you know what's funny about your comments?

You haven't mentioned the killer. Or the victims. Just word choice.

So maybe you should STFU until you've got something more interesting to complain about than the world "arsenal" as it relates to a shit-ton of firepower used for pure evil.

Todd- I wasn't commenting on the shooting, nothing I could say would change the fact it was an horrible event carried out by a lunatic.Didn't think I would need to state the oblivious. I was commenting on the use of the word arsenal to describe 2 pistols, a shotgun, and a sporting rifle seems like sensationalism to me.

Todd- Your right should have kept my opinion to myself, after listening to people argue whether the shooting was a tragedy or an atrocity on a forum I am a mod on,I thought good grief I must have sounded like these idiots. I'm sure Donna and I will have another chance to argue/discuss/debate gun terminology at a later date.

I found an article in the (Tuscon) Three Sonorans called "White Privilege and Mass Murders in America", which questions why white mass murderers are hardly ever labeled terrorists, but minority suspects are. It was a point I brought up earlier:

Same reason we can't identify the religion of the most prolific mass murdering terrorists on the planet. Political correctness. But in reality they are usually fringe lunatics not associated with religious or political terrorism. They are usually looking for personal notoriety not as much to destabilize the entire planet.

That's a non sequitur, scrappy. Who can't identify religion of terrorists and mass murderers? This happens all the time. It's been reported over and over again that the 911 terrorists proclaim to be Muslims and that Timothy McVeigh and that other dude claimed to be Christians.

I agree with you that most mass murderers are fringe lunatics and all faiths have some that claim those faiths.

As for goldeneagle's point, you didn't address it at all. In our country, mass murderers and gunmen who shoot up crowds are overwhelmingly white. Using your logic, that would indicate that white men are more likely to be fringe lunatics looking for personal notoriety. I don't think I agree with such a simplistic assessment.
