The city has lifted a boil water alert in effect since last Friday after two consecutive clear tests by the Health Department, a statement this morning said.

Last Friday, a water main break off of Interstate 220 north of the Highway 49 exit caused low water pressure south of Interstate 20, east to the Pearl river and west to Robinson Road. Jackson State University suspended classes and activities over the weekend due to low water pressure as crews worked to repair the break. The city issued a precautionary boil water for anyone experiencing low water pressure, and JSU encouraged students and staff to leave campus over the weekend if possible.

By Tuesday, contractors had repaired the water main, but the boil water notice remained in effect until crews finished flushing the pipe and the water tested clear.

Two years ago, Gov. Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency for the city after cold weather caused about 70 water line breaks around the city.
