MEMA Shelter Update

PEARL—Public shelters will begin opening as Tropical Storm Isaac continues its move toward the Gulf Coast.

MEMA Executive Director Robert Latham urges residents to finalize their evacuation plans, as coastal Mississippi could see tropical storm force winds beginning Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

“Residents should finalize evacuation plans now and should not wait until the last minute,” MEMA Executive Director Robert Latham said. “Even though Isaac has tracked slightly to the west, Mississippi will still see impacts. We have a good chance of seeing high winds, very heavy rains and significant storm surge. Anyone who lives in a low-lying area should make plans to move to a safer area. Most importantly, heed all evacuation requests and orders as soon as they are issued.”

Latham also urges residents to stay with friends and family when possible, leaving public shelters available to those who have no other place to go.

A list of shelter openings follows. Residents should monitor local media outlets for updates.

Forrest County: One shelter opening at 5 p.m. today. Forrest County community shelter: 946 Sullivan Road, Hattiesburg. Pet-friendly shelter. Hancock County: Three shelters opening at 2 p.m. today. Kiln shelter: 18320 Hwy. 43. Dedeaux shelter: 1095 Road 350. Jackson County: Four shelters opening at 4 p.m. today. St. Martin High School. Vancleave High School. East Central High School. East Central Community Center—special needs shelter.

MEMA updates shelter information as it becomes available. Shelter updates may also be available from the Mississippi Red Cross at www.mississippi-redcross.org. This website also lists what items evacuees should bring to a Red Cross Shelter.

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors proclaimed a “Declaration of Local Emergency” today in advance of Tropical Storm Isaac. A Hurricane Warning is now in effect for Jackson County. National Weather Service forecasters are predicting drenching rains as this system moves ashore. The first tropical storm force winds are expected to be felt around midnight on Monday, if not earlier. Jackson County Emergency Management Director Donald Langham is asking residents living in low-lying and flood prone areas to evacuate those areas before the onset of tropical storm winds that are expected around midnight. Weather will begin to deteriorate quickly at that point. Citizens should finalize all of there pre-storm preparations and stay-tuned to local weather stations

The Emergency Declaration allows the County to take several precautionary steps, including:

· Sandbags:

The County is now offering free sand bags (self serve) at the following 12 locations: · Latimer Community Center - 10908 Daisy Vestry Rd · West Division Road Department on N. Washington Ave. (Hwy. 609) · West Jackson County Fire Department – 15324 Big Ridge Road · Fountainebleu Fire Department on 3901 Hwy. 57 (south) · St. Andrews Fire Department – 1401 Elm St. · Simmons Bayou Fire Department – 2300 East Simmons Bayou (Gulf Park Estates) · Forts Lake Fire Department - 10701 Forts Lake Rd. · Orange Grove Community Center – 5625 Orange Grove Road · Old Americus Road Fire Department – 24321 Old Americus Road · Three Rivers Fire Department – 16933 Hwy 63 · East Roads Department on Hwy. 63 in Escatawpa · Central Roads Department on 8500 Jim Ramsey Rd. in Vancleave

· Small Craft Harbor: The Harbor Master is limiting access to the Small Craft Harbor in Ocean Springs. The Harbor is closed to all “transient vessels” until the threat of tropical weather subsides. All current boat owners with valid “Slip Lease Agreements” can continue to dock their boats and “come-and-go” in the Harbor. Harbor staff is contacting owners with vessels that can be put on a trailer to ask them to remove them, though it’s not required. Boats left in the Harbor

United Way of the Capital Area’s health and human services call center is now activated to handle calls concerning Tropical Storm Isaac. As MEMA’s official public information call center during national disaster, 2-1-1 Mississippi is prepared to answer thousands of calls from people seeking shelter, supplies, medicine, or any other help as Isaac approaches.

United Way’s 2-1-1 is a statewide call service for health and human service needs. It is active at all times of the year, but during times of natural disaster, 2-1-1 partners with MEMA to help reduce their call volume and free them up for other duties. During Hurricane Gustav, United Way’s 2-1-1 call center handled more than 10,000 calls from people throughout the Southeast who were in Mississippi seeking shelter or other help.

This year, United Way is even better prepared to help facilitate a large call volume thanks to the donation of 2 Smart Boards from Detel. Smart Boards will allow 2-1-1 staff to quickly update information such as shelter openings and closings, road and bridge closings, special needs assistance, prescription drug help, and more to call specialists.

Callers seeking help can dial 2-1-1 from any phone or can call (866) 472-8265.

From Bailey Gilchrist, manager, external Relations of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce:

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Offers Tool to Help Businesses In Advance of Tropical Storm Isaac

Chamber’s Business Civic Leadership Center Activates Network and Tools to Help Businesses Prepare

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) today announced that its National Disaster Help Desk for Business is activated in advance of Tropical Storm Isaac’s potential landfall this week in the southeastern United States. The Help Desk, made possible by the Office Depot Foundation, is a tool for fast and reliable information that will help small business and local chambers of commerce access the suite of relief and recovery resources available to them as they prepare for and cope with damage from the storm.

“Small businesses are particularly vulnerable in times of natural disasters,” says U.S. Chamber BCLC senior disaster manager Gerald McSwiggan. “Every business owner can take very simple steps to help avoid loss, damage, or disruption caused by the storm, and the Help Desk can help you prepare and recover.”

The U.S. Chamber BCLC encourages every company and chamber of commerce that is located in the Southeast United States to consider Tropical Storm Isaac a potentially serious threat, and to prepare accordingly.

Statistics show that one in four small businesses will experience a disruptive natural disaster and, of those, 43% won’t recover. The U.S. Chamber BCLC wants to ensure that every business and chamber of commerce is adequately prepared before, during and after disasters. Business owners, chamber leaders and individuals are encouraged to contact the Help Desk if:

  • You are in the impact area and want help navigating assistance programs from FEMA, the Small Business Administration and others. You want information about business resilience and recovery best practices. You want to provide support to businesses coping with this disaster.

“Managing through a disaster is about creating networks,” continued McSwiggan. “The U.S. Chamber BCLC and our Help Desk are here to assist in all phases of preparing for and recovering from the hurricane.”

To learn more about the preparedness and recovery resources available and to reach a disaster expert, contact the Help Desk online, by email or phone (888-MY-BIZ HELP or 888- 692-4943), or on Facebook and Twitter.

The offices of the Mississippi Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association have taken steps to prepare for Tropical Storm Isaac and encourage individuals in potential affected areas to be prepared. For people with memory loss, a disruption like this can be tremendously stressful and confusing and can overload the mental ability of the person to act rationally. The Alzheimer’s Association has a variety of resources to provide education and assistance. Further information can be found on the Alzheimer’s Association Web site at www.alz.org.

After Hurricane Katrina, many people with dementia were displaced because they had no identification on them. The Alzheimer’s Association encourages enrollment in MedicAlert® + Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return® by calling the toll free number at 1-888-572-8566. Persons can be enrolled immediately and given a number for identification. Those who are already enrolled should be sure that their information is current.

Persons who have a family member in a long-term care facility should contact that facility and ask for information on its disaster and evacuation plan. Details about where the facility plans to take the residents and what type of identification the loved one will have on them should be obtained.

Additional assistance is available by contacting the 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900 for information and resources.

The Alzheimer’s Association office in Jackson urges everyone to take the steps needed to ensure the safety of all family members.
