Man Guilty for Smuggling Undocumented Immigrants

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say a Texas man has pleaded guilty in Mississippi to transporting undocumented immigrants.

A news release from the U. S. attorney's office says Jonathan Garcia-Ramirez was pulled over on Interstate 20 in Rankin County on April 15. There were 10 undocumented immigrants from Mexico in the van he was driving.

The trip originated in Houston, Texas, with Garcia-Ramirez's first passenger to be dropped off in Atlanta. He then planned to head to New York and New Jersey before returning to Texas. Garcia-Ramirez was to be paid $1,500 for transporting the undocumented immigrants to various cities.

U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate will sentence Garcia-Ramirez in Jackson on Oct. 18. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
