Inmates Injured in Jail Fight

— A fight that broke out this afternoon at the downtown Jackson jail resulted in injuries for three prisoners, WAPT reports.

After a 10-minute scuffle, deputies quelled the fight and secured the Hinds County-run facility. One of the inmates received treatment at University of Mississippi Medical Center for a possible broken nose. Two other inmates had minor injuries.

The fight follows a series of high-profile events for which the county and Sheriff's Department have drawn criticism.

On July 25, the jail's medical services contractor said it would no longer provide care at the facility citing to few nurses and non-medical staff at the jail making medical decisions.

Then, a July 31 disturbance in which inmates took over at least two of the Raymond Detention Center's four housing units in Pod C for nearly 12 hours left the pod uninhabitable and in need of major repairs.

At a Hinds County supervisors meeting Aug. 6, the board hired White Construction Co., which has constructed other correctional facilities, to conduct a needs assessment for possible repairs to the Raymond jail.
