HealthGrades, an independent reviewer of physician information and hospital quality outcomes, named Mississippi Baptist Medical Center among the best 100 hospitals in the nation for orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, general surgery and prostatectomy.

Overall, Baptist achieved 135 star ratings and five specialty excellence awards. The report found that Baptist is the best in the Jackson area for overall orthopedics and the best in Mississippi for coronary interventions.

Women of Color Entrepreneurs to Meet

Jackson State University will host the 2011 Women of Color Entrepreneurs Conference Nov. 1-2 at the Mississippi e-Center (1230 Raymond Road)

The JSU Department of Entrepreneurship in the College of Business is sponsoring the event.

Themed "Creating Economic Opportunities," the conference will provide workshops covering topics on SBA and MDA certification and training; making a business bankable; global opportunities in contracting; social entrepreneurship; and funding opportunities for women-owned small businesses.

Guest speaker is Gwendolyn Keyes-Fleming, the first African-American U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 4 Regional administrator. Pres. Barack Obama appointed Keyes-Fleming to the post in September 2010. In 2005, Keyes-Fleming became the first African-American and first woman to serve as DeKalb County, Ga., district attorney. Her topic is "Educating, Enhancing and Empowering Women Entrepreneurs." She will speak at 9 a.m. Nov. 1.

New Night Club Opens

Wendy's Latenight Playhouse (206 W. Capitol St., 601-720-1800) opened last week and is shifting its focus slightly.

"It was going to be 21 and up," owner Wendy Ramage told the Jackson Free Press this morning. "We've changed it to 18 and up."

The dance club opens at 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. This Saturday, Oct. 29, the club will hold a Halloween costume contest and award prizes.
