The annual rite of fall has begun. Sunday, Oct. 16, the first BCS—Bowl Championship Series—standings were released.

No surprises at the top: LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State are in the top five. Anyone following the JFP Top 25 knows that LSU and Alabama jumped Oklahoma way before the rest of the country caught on.

This season, more than any other, features teams who have played a bunch of nobodies. Clemson is undefeated but has played a cupcake schedule. Clemson claims one half-assed good win over Auburn at home. I won't even count ACC schools a "good" win since the ACC sucks this year.

Wisconsin might be undefeated, too, but please, let me know when they stop playing high-school teams. The combined record of teams Wisconsin has beaten is 16-23.

Folks want to laugh at Boise State's schedule, but how can anyone think Wisconsin has done anything noteworthy when three teams they played have only one win each?

In my opinion, the ACC, Big East and Big-10 are the worst conferences of the big six. The SEC, Pac-12 and Big-12 are in the top three.

The ACC is so bad that, if they were in it, Mississippi State and Mississippi would have a perfect record, even if they played every game on the road. Want to know how bad the Big-10 is? Vanderbilt would be undefeated and in the BCS standings if they played in that conference. And how bad is the Big East? Three teams have 5-1 records, but none of them should be ranked.

There is no question that the SEC is the best conference in the country. Only three of its teams have losing records—UM, MSU and Kentucky—but their defeats have mostly come from other SEC schools. Except for a UM loss to BYU and a Kentucky loss to Louisville, the rest have come from SEC foes.

The Pac-12 is second best because Oregon and Stanford are that good. The rest of the Pac-12 is weak this season. but those two more than make up for the lack of depth.

I'm not sure how good the Big-12 is just yet. Kansas State is overrated. Baylor was way overrated. Texas A&M is going to get their butts kicked weekly in the SEC. Still, I have to tip my cap to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. These two teams can play anywhere.
