For the past six years, Jay Losset and members of the Umlaut Standing Krewe have arrived at the corner of Capitol and Congress streets as early as 8 a.m. to stake out their turf for the Mal's St. Paddy's Parade.

This year the parade-watching krewe, which has grown to 65 members, will revel in green garb, with green pinatas and a papier-mache guitar by local artist Ginger Williams adorning their sidewalk tents.

Losset, a native of Gautier, Miss., is one of the original 10 Belhaven residents who started the krewe, named after the diacritic that traditionally appears above the names of '80s hair metal bands such as Moetley Crue. The Umlaut Standing Krewe now has its own T-shirts and posters.

"The best thing (about the parade) is to see that many people come to Jackson," Losset says. "It's the crowds, the costumes, the pets and the crazy antics. It's fun and family friendly. It's like the one day out of the year that you can revel in downtown Jackson. Anything goes."

Losset, 34, moved to Jackson after earning bachelor's degrees in economics and international business from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1999. He works as a broadcast producer at the Godwin Group, a Jackson advertising agency.
