It's The Weekend: Hit the Streets

photo

It's perfect weather for a street festival, and Jackson doesn't disappoint. Already in progress when you read this, Jacktoberfest has taken over Congress Street between Amite and Capitol streets with "bands, brats and beer all day long." Admission is free, which is even better. The festivities go until 11 p.m. Also today, the Yoga of Power workshop begins at Butterfly Yoga with guest instructor Christina Sell and continues through Sunday. Classes for all levels including teachers; prices vary. Call 601-594-2313. Where to start your search for things to do in Jacktown? the JFP Best Bets page, of course!

If today's street festivities have you yearning for more outdoor happenings, don't despair: Saturday, head to Farish Street for Shalom: A Day of Health and Wellness starting at 7 a.m., and then downtown to Smith Park for the annual OUToberfest starting at 1 p.m. If a road-trip is more your style, the Great Delta Bear Affair in downtown Rolling Fork kicks off at 9 a.m. All of the festivals promise food and music plus special events geared to their audiences. You can also lace up your walking or running shoes for a good cause. Choose from the Dog Trot and Cat Walk for ARF Mississippi at 9 a.m., or the Walk to Cure Diabetes at 10 a.m. Get the details for these activities and more at Jackson's No. 1 website for events: The JFP Events Calendar.

For those of us who would rather spend time indoors, Jackson's Saturday night lineup may be just right for what ails you. At 7:30 p.m., the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and guest pianist Tavit Tashijan perform music from classic American composers Gershwin, Porter and Berlin in Pops I: Rhapsody in Blue at the Jackson Convention Center. Practically next door at 8 p.m., comedian Kevin Hart takes the stage at Thalia Mara Hall. Or, if you just can't wait another week for Halloween, head to Hal & Mal's for the Freak-o-ween 80s Costume Party at 9 p.m. Find a complete musical lineup for Saturday and every day on the JFP Music Listings, where you'll find nearly two dozen options for Saturday alone, from blues to rock to country and classical.

And you've got to eat, right? Give yourself a break from cooking and cleaning by choosing of the city's fabulous eateries. Find your new favorite on the JFP Restaurant Listings and the Menu Guide.

Is something missing? To make sure your event is listed on the JFP calendars, send the information to [e-mail missing] or [e-mail missing], or add your event yourself. It's easy!
