The Jackson Police Department's Operation Safeshop is combating crime by placing 22 officers on constant rotation in retail areas throughout the city.

The operation started on Black Friday and will end on Dec. 26. JPD Public Information Officer Colendula Green told the Jackson Free Press today that the officers from Hinds County and JPD have been successful in preventing car burglaries, shoplifting, business break ins and other crimes that typically occur around the holidays.

"During Operation Safeshop, we don't have a lot of increases in crime," Green said. "The officers are at a steady pace of patrolling and observing."

For the week of Nov. 29 through Dec. 5 JPD reported an overall decrease in citywide crime from 205 to 173. Total property crimes decreased from 177 to 150 and total violent crimes decreased from 28 to 23. Precinct 2 reported a significant decrease in total crimes from 60 to 35. Precinct 1 was the only precinct to report an increase with 55 total crimes, up from 53 the week prior. The department also reported 22 auto thefts. In five of those thefts, owners had left their keys in the car.
