Eminent Domain Petition Circulating

photo

After Gov. Haley Barbour vetoed a bill last year to limit the state's use of eminent domain, the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation is circulating a petition to put the issue to the state's voters on the 2011 ballot, reports WLBT. The bureau wants to limit government takeovers of private land to public use projects, such as roads and bridges.

Just over a year ago, the state Legislature overwhelmingly passed a bill restricting eminent domain from being used for for-profit, private projects; however, Barbour called the bill "fatally flawed."

"t would do more damage to job creation and economic development than any government action since Mississippi rightfully began trying to balance agriculture with industry in 1935," he said in a statement at the time.
