Are You Ready for the Weekend, Jackson?

photo

This weekend is your last chance to catch the hilariously irreverent "Gutenberg! The Musical," with Turner Crumbley (left) and Danny Dauphin.

Kick off the first weekend in autumn tonight with a couple of movies for only $5. At 6:30 p.m., Crossroads Film Society presents "My Time Will Come," from Ecuador, and "The Photograph," from Indonesia at the Mississippi Museum of Art (museum members get in for $3). For opera lovers, head to Millsaps College for a rare, free treat. Robert Crowe, a male soprano, will sing Mozart and Haydn arias beginning at 7 p.m. at the Ford Academic Complex. If you're looking for a way to contribute to the community, at 8:30 p.m., head to Galloway United Methodist Church for "Ending Homelessness: Putting the Pieces Together in Our Community," the final event in the Mississippi State Hospital's Homeless Connect Week. You have plenty more options to choose from, so if none of those make you happy, head over to the JFP Events Calendar for more options.

This Saturday is definitely a time to roll out early. With fun for the entire family, the 25th annual Wellsfest—billed as Jackson's original music festival—begins at 10 a.m. at Jamie Fowler Boyle Park next to Smith-Wills Stadium. The fun includes all kinds of music—including blues, reggae, country and alt rock—crafts, a pet parade, a 5K run and a whole lot more. Saturday is also national Museum Day, which means the Mississippi Museum of Art waives admission for today only. Don't forget Jackson's great lineup of farmer's markets, including the Mississippi Farmers Market at 8 a.m., the Greater Belhaven Market at 9 a.m. and the Congress Street Market at 10 a.m. where you can stock up on fresh produce and handmade goodies for the whole week. You'll find more happenings on the JFP Best Bets page.

Saturday night, head to One to One Studies for "Mobiles," featuring a unique collaboration of music, dance and photography starting at 7:30 p.m. Then, put your dancing shoes on and head to one of Jackson area's many nightclubs. The lineups include Common Ground Blues Band or Scott Albert Johnson and others at Hal & Mal's, Jackie Bell at 930 Blues Cafe, the Vernon Brothers at Underground 119, and DJs at Cultural Expressions, 88 Keys, and Electric Cowboy. Need more choices? Check the JFP Music Listings before heading out the door.

To impress your weekend date, spring for a romantic dinner for two. To find that perfect combination of food and atmosphere, don't forget the JFP Restaurant Listings and the Menu Guide. And if it's movies you want, check the JFP Movie Finder.

Sunday morning and brunch is simply a great combination. Add a little music to the mix at Fitzgerald's or Sophia's. Then, head to Gluckstadt for its annual Germanfest starting at 11 a.m. For the oenophiles (aka wine lovers) in town, at 4 p.m., it's back to Jackson and BRAVO! Italian Restaurant to hone your knowledge of pinot noirs. Advance reservations are required, so check the Best Bets page for more info. In between brunch and wine tasting, head to New Stage Theatre for the final performance of "Gutenburg! The Musical!" at 2 p.m. This smart, silly, irreverent spoof of Broadway musicals, history, religion and more will have you laughing out loud.

Do you have your very own "I Get It Once a Week" JFP T-Shirt, yet? You don't? Really? Well, head to the JFP Swag Store and get you one.

Is something missing? To make sure your event is listed on the JFP calendars, send the information to [e-mail missing] or [e-mail missing], or add your event yourself. It's easy!
