Have Your Cake and Drink it, Too

photo

What could be more fitting for a birthday party than a bottle of wine named Cupcake? Cupcake Vineyards, a California-based winery, began launching the Cupcake line of wine in 2008. Cupcake Vineyards now feature several varietals including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Syrah, and Riesling.

Perry Launius with Wine and Spirits in the Quarter on Lakeland Drive recommends pairing Cupcake Vineyards Chardonnay with–what else?–but cake. Viognier or Sauvignon Blanc varietals also make a great complement. Perry suggests medium bodied reds such as Shiraz, Syrah or Zinfandel for those decadent chocolate desserts. Simple fruit arrangements pair well with a Riesling.

Next time you find yourself shopping for the perfect wine to serve your guests, add a few of these names to your list. These mid-range wines are sure to not only satisfy your taste buds, but at less than $20 a bottle, will leave you with a little extra "dough" in your wallet.

Nothing could be sweeter.

Cupcake Chardonnay - $13
Victory Vineyards Zinfandel - $16
Nabuko Syrah - $15
Rudolph Muller Riesling Spatlese - $13
