Paramount Pictures will be in Jackson Saturday, Jan. 2, looking for a young actress to star in the new Coen Brothers' film, "True Grit," which will begin shooting in spring. Writer-directors Joel and Ethan Coen "would love, love, love to find somebody unknown" Casting Director Rachel Tenner said in a release. "Any girls with an instinct to try should come and give it a shot."

Tenner worked with the Coens on "A Serious Man," "Burn After Reading" and "No Country for Old Men," which won the Best Picture Oscar in 2008. The Coens are looking for a 12 to 16-year-old girl for the role of Mattie Ross, described as "a simple, tough as nails young woman. Her steely nerves and straightforward manner are a shocking contrast to the way women behaved in the early century. She's possessed of true grit and plenty of determination. Enough so, that she insists on going with two marshals to hunt down the killer of her father."

Saturday's open call will be held from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, aka the King Edward, 235 W. Capitol St. Actresses should bring a current photo to leave, and only one parent or guardian should accompany her.

The Coens' "True Grit" will remake the film of the same name that earned John Wayne an Oscar in 1969 for his portrayal of Sheriff Rooster Cogburn. The film, slated to begin shooting March 20, 2010, will be shot in New Mexico and Texas.
