Major crimes in Jackson decreased again last week, according to a weekly report (PDF) released at a meeting today by the Jackson Police Department. Police reported 230 total crimes, down 7.6 percent from the previous week. Last week's total was almost 20 percent below the same period last year. The city has seen 1.6 percent fewer crimes this year than last year.

All four JPD Precincts reported decreases in crime from the previous week. Precinct 2, which covers the west and central parts of the city, reported the greatest decrease, from 68 to 58 total crimes. For the year, Precinct 2 is just 1 percent below last year's numbers, with major decreases in almost all violent crime categories offset by a nearly 30 percent increase in auto burglaries.

Precinct 3 reported 57 total crimes last week, down from 61 the week before. This year to date, the Northwest Jackson precinct has seen a 11.3 percent increase in crime over last year, largely on the strength of increases in auto and house burglaries.

Northeast Jackson's Precinct 4 reported a slight decrease from 59 to 55 total crimes last week. Thus far, Precinct 4 has had a 17.6 percent decrease in crime from last year, the biggest decrease in the city.

South Jackson's Precinct 1 reported 60 crimes, down one from the previous week. For the year to date, the precinct has reported 4.8 percent more crimes than last year.

Auto burglaries remain the most common crime in Jackson. Precinct 4 Commander Kenneth Goodrum told JPD command staff at the meeting that 10 of the 31 auto burglaries his officers reported last week took place overnight from Aug. 23-24 at a single apartment complex: The Crossings on Ridgewood Road. Apartment residents have not responded to his attempts at outreach, Goodrum said.

Precinct 2 Commander Jesse Robinson told command staff that his officers cleared five auto burglaries with an arrest this weekend of a husband-and-wife team. Officers caught the couple breaking into cars near Freelon's nightclub on Mill Street, Robinson said. The couple live in "rural Hinds County," Robinson said, and were traveling into Jackson on Saturday nights.

"Some folks go to the movies on Saturday night," Assistant Chief Lee Vance remarked.
