Three Mississippi Colleges Named ‘Best Buys'

Mississippi State University, Mississippi College and Millsaps College all made the 2009 Forbes "Best College Buys" list, which divides a school's overall quality score by its average tuition rates for the '03-'04 to '06-'07 years. The quality score is calculated by summing each school's score with respect to "Who's Who in America" citations, salary data from PayScale.com, course evaluations from RateMyProfessor.com, the receipt of student and faculty nationally competitive awards, and the graduation rate variables used in the Best College rankings, according to Forbes.

MSU came in at No. 18 on the list, with MC and Millsaps at 24 and 39, respectively. "Fiske's Top Financial Finds" also named Millsaps a best buy in June, one of only 24 private schools nationwide and the only college in Mississippi to make that list.

At the top spot on the Forbes list is Berea College in Kentucky, followed by the New College of Florida, the U.S. Military Academy in New York and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. Rounding out the top five Forbes "Best College Buys" is the University of Wyoming.

Ms Ronnie the clarionledger had an article up last week about JSU ranking #1 in educating black teachers, ranked #4 in blacks receiving their masters and i think ranked #3 in African Americans receiving their doctorate degrees. I think this will go well with Millsaps article. Im glad that Jackson has some of the most diverse and nationally ranked colleges around.

Congratulations to Mississippi State, Millsaps, Jackson State University, MS College and all other institutions that can bring positives to our State. We need this positive publicity to try to counter some of the categories that we are dead last for positives and dead first for negatives. Hats Off to these fine MS institutions!
