LWV: ‘Make Good' on Debate Pledge

Even as John McCain is still resisting the debate, the League of Women Voters released this statement, verbatim:

League president Mary Wilson today urged Senators Obama and McCain to move ahead with tomorrow's scheduled presidential debate. "We applaud Senators Obama and McCain, as well as the Administration and Congress, for their sincere efforts to arrive at an agreement that will simultaneously help our financial institutions regain solid ground and bring relief to the millions of Americans who are at risk of losing their homes and jobs," Wilson said.

"However, in doing so, the candidates must also make good on their pledge to speak openly and candidly with American voters. The best way to do that is to move ahead as scheduled with tomorrow's presidential debate."

"This is not a time for the candidates to hide behind the marble walls of the Capitol building; this is a time for them to stand before all of us and have a frank discussion about the challenges we face as a nation."

"For over 88 years, the League of Women Voters has fought to hold elected officials accountable for their actions and encourage citizens to take an active part in our democracy. We hope that Senators Obama and McCain will keep up their end of the bargain and join all of us in tomorrow night's important discussion about our future," she concluded.

The League has a range of educational debate materials available at http://www.lwv.org.
