Gov. Winter: McCain Takes ‘Red' Mississippi for Granted

Former Gov. William Winter, an Ole Miss graduate and the founder of the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation, had this to say about McCain trying to stand up Ole Miss:

Former Mississippi governor William Winter, whose letter in support of Ole Miss' application to the Commission on Presidential Debates carried great weight, expressed the outrage some others repressed. Winter, a Democrat, suggested McCain would not have spurned a swing state like Michigan, but takes for granted solidly Republican Mississippi. "I cannot comprehend that Senator McCain would do that," he said. "It is thoughtless and inconsiderate, and totally without regard to the expense and effort and conscientious participation on the part of thousands of people."

Oxford mayor Richard Howorth, also a Democrat, said he believed the financial crisis should be a reason to have a debate, not cancel one.

"It seems to me it would be a benefit for the public to hear a conversation between the two candidates on this very issue," he said. "I hope John McCain will reconsider."
