Obama Campaign Opportunities

The Jackson Free Press received several e-mails regarding opportunities with the Obama campaign in Mississippi.

First, the campaign is in need of volunteers--specifically, a lead coordinator for the Coast and a few public officials and/or community leaders who can speak and "rally the troops" at local meetings and events. If you're available and interested, contact Louisa Dixon at 601-214-5718.

Second, the Women for Obama will be holding a meeting tomorrow, Sept. 16, 7 p.m. at the Obama Campaign Mississippi Headquarters, 733 N. State St. Call 601-383-8885 for more info.

Is there a "MoveOn.org" MS or is that an oxymoron? Is there a codepink group in MS? I am very interested in the moveon stye. I am sorry that I cannot offer a home for a meeting; we live with our children at present who are rapid Republicans--and we still love them. I'm happy to help create and put together a move-on gathering. We live in Madison, but I'll gladly travel the MetroPlex area. Will there be groups of folks meeting to listen to the Oxford Debate? I'm very interested in joining others (GLBT, liberal, people of colour, clergy) for this event. Is there an Obama headaquarters in JXN? Where? oonagh+

vib: There is definitely a MoveOn.org group in Jackson, or there was last year. Contact MoveOn.org for the details, but I think there's even a MoveOn.org-sponsored Obama party in Jackson on Sunday. I don't know about Code Pink. I'm pretty sure there isn't a group, actually, because I stay pretty connected to the feminist activist community and would have gotten word of it. The Obama Headquarters is on N. State Street (921, I think, but don't quote me on that); there are some big-ass Obama signs out front. There are also lots of upcoming Obama events (there was a Women for Obama meeting at HQ this evening). In particular, there's a pretty big activism opportunity coming up this weekend--email me at [email protected] for details, or (even better) friend me if you're on Facebook. (This offer goes for everybody reading this who has a serious interest in volunteering for the Obama campaign.) My friend Valencia Robinson of AIDS Action in Mississippi is working with a large number of HIV-AIDS activists recreating James Meredith's march from Jackson to Oxford as we speak, and will be there to protest the debates to raise awareness of HIV-AIDS. It might not be too late to join the caravan. I'm not aware of a viewing party (contact Obama HQ about that; I'm sure they'd know), but if you host one and promote it on LoungeList's Obama group I suspect you will get good attendance. The big issue right now re: Obama is voter registration, as the deadline is October 3rd. I've volunteered at two voter registration events already myself, and there will be a big voter registration initiative next week. There's plenty of action to go around!

vib: Obama HQ is 733 N. State Street. # is (601) 383 8885. While I'm happy to relay what I know, that's probably the best place to go for info on the Obama campaign--I'm definitely an Obama supporter, but I do most of my volunteering with other organizations and might not always know what's coming up.

Uhm, did the Louisa Dixon phone # and everything appear in the original blog entry? Because if so, I must have been really sleep deprived when I wrote the above post--I could have just referred folks to the top of the article and saved everyone a little bit of reading. ;o)
