GOP Senator's Wife and Ike's Granddaughter to Endorse Obama Tuesday

Nice. You start playing the race/terrorist card and look what happens. Associated Press:

Lilibet Hagel has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday with Susan Eisenhower, the daughter of Republican President Eisenhower.Hagel, R-Neb., has made no endorsement. Lilibet Hagel said in an Associated Press interview that her decision was independent of her husband. She said she didn't know whether he would make an endorsement or whom he would support. "You'd have to ask him," Lilibet Hagel said.

She said it will be her first endorsement of a Democrat and that perilous world conditions were a factor. "The fact is we're in two wars, two of the longest we've ever been in. We've run up a third of our nation's debt in just the past eight years. We're in the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression," she said.

The Hagels know John and Cindy McCain, and she said her endorsement was not meant to slam them. "This isn't anti-McCain. This is pro-Obama. I'm just convinced he's the right person," she said.

More evidence of Obama's widening lead over McCain with women even after Palin was chosen as McCain's VP.

I think Susan is Ike's granddaughter, actually. I saw her on -- oh what was it -- maybe the Colbert Report a few weeks ago? And she was already endorsing Obama back then. That's really saying something!!

I had thought that, too, Andi, but I went with what AP was saying in the headline. I'll double-check and change it when I get to the office. She spoke during the Democratic Convention, too. The Hagel one is wacky and wonderful. I suspect we'll see more of a parade of unlikelies if McCain doesn't call the (pit)bull off with all the offensive insults, that predictably are attracting bigots willing to yell at black media workers (see other thread). Gross.

I didn't know Hagel's wife is from Mississippi. Go on, home girl! Lilibet Hagel, the wife of GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel, is endorsing Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama this morning, an unusual public pronouncement for the low-profile Mississippi native and one that could stir speculation about her husband's presidential preference. Hagel was expected to announce her support at a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria. She was scheduled to appear with Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of President Eisenhower and a prominent "Obamican," as the campaign calls its GOP supporters. Lilibet Hagel, whose donations to the Obama campaign were made public by The Washington Post earlier this year, told the Associated Press in an interview that she has no idea whether her husband will endorse a candidate in the presidential race. "You'll have to ask him," she said.
