Mississippi Museum of Art Receives Major Gift

[Verbatim] The Mississippi Museum of Art received a gift of 50 works of contemporary art from New York collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel. The donors began purchasing art in the 1960s, and by the 1990s, their collection reached into the thousands. The National Gallery of Art, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services have worked with the Vogels to create a program entitled The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States. Inspired by the Kress Foundation's placement of old master paintings throughout the US, the program targets one art institution in each state to receive a share of 2,500 works.

"We are thrilled that the Mississippi Museum of Art was chosen as Mississippi's recipient of this amazing gift," said director Betsy Bradley. "Fifty Works for Fifty States is a brilliant and generous gesture on the part of the Vogels and their supporting institutions. By sharing the works in this way, Mississippians will have an unprecedented opportunity to experience contemporary art."
