Apparently feeling the pain of late night talk-show hosts, President-Elect Barack Obama took time out of his busy transition schedule to put together an approved list of jokes for the comedians to use. They're doozies, like:

A traveling salesman knocks on the door of a farmhouse, and much to his surprise, Barack Obama answers the door. The salesman says, "I was expecting the farmer's daughter." Barack Obama replies, "She's not here. The farm was foreclosed on because of subprime loans that are making a mockery of the American Dream."

(OK, this bit actually dates back to July, but I missed it, and I'm crackin' myself up on these. I got to the story by following the link to the equally amusing Failure to Blow Election Stuns Democrats.)

My guess is most prominent white comedians are generally uneasy about making jokes about black people out of fear of being offensive. Obama's not an easy guy to parody and make fun of, since as Chris Rock said he's just too "cool". His bad habit of saying "uh" before every other sentence has been picked up by Fred Armisen who plays him on SNL. Once he's actually President and his administration makes gaffes and missteps, the late-night guys will have more material to work with.

Actually, Jeff, I heard Obama say "aaaaaaand" quite a bit. I think that he says "and" to cut down on saying "uh". Michelle's an "um" woman. Biden tends to hold his mouth open. McCain has a lot of awkward grins and snickers, and Palin tries to see how many words she can squeeze into five seconds.
