What songs reflect your personality, temperament and beliefs? I tend to like songs that are funky, mellow or whimsical. Here are some examples:

As you can see, I like all kinds of music: gospel, neosoul, electronica, classical, etc. To me, a real music lover would be hard pressed to stick to one genre.

How about some of your song choices? What would your soundtrack sound like?

Ooh, good thread idea... Blues: Up-tempo. Anything Jackie Bell does, including sneeze. B.B., of course. Etta James' version of "Don't Start Me To Talking." Anybody's version of "Hoochie Coochie Man." Mainly stuff that's heavy on vocals, light on instrumentals--most of John Lee Hooker's stuff, for example, doesn't do it for me. Jazz: Anything but experimental if I'm in a mellow mood, almost nothing written after 1975 if I'm not. Classical: In the romanticism:classicism debate, I fall on the romanticism side of things. Mozart, Schumann, a little Mahler from time to time. Beethoven. Philip Glass, in small doses. Any choral works. Old Anglican hymns. Anything with a Jewish or "old Europe" melody. Rock: U2. Prog-rock if it isn't too precious; Genesis, both Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel eras. Collins' and Gabriel's solo work, especially Gabriel's. A few glam-rock bands, especially Scissor Sisters (my latest obsession). Green Day's American Idiot. R.E.M., but in small doses. Quirky rock--Magnetic Fields, Talking Heads, They Might Be Giants, Logan Whitehurst, the Weird Al/Dweezil Zappa "Genius in France" collaboration, the Flaming Lips (especially Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots). Anything written by Jim Steinman, especially if sung by Meat Loaf or any female vocalist (Bonnie Tyler was and is amazing). Le Tigre, but not Bikini Kill. Anything New Wave, especially New Order. Soul/R&B: Jill Scott; "Hate on Me" should have lived on Billboard's top ten for 30 years. Mary J. Blige, of course. Marvin and Luther. The original Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes version of "If You Don't Know Me By Now," though Simply Red does it justice, too. Boyz II Men's early stuff. Hip-hop: Love Chamillionaire's voice. Love Kanye's songwriting. Will Smith, post-Fresh Prince. Being a total nerd, I used to love P.M. Dawn. Folk/Singer-Songwriters: Billy Joel, Elton John, Sarah McLachlan, Leonard Cohen, Indigo Girls. I, too, went to see the doctor of philosophy with a poster of Rasputin and a beard down to his knee. Phil Ochs. Neither Bob Dylan nor Joan Baez really work for me as vocalists, but I love their songwriting. Tori Amos' more fast-paced stuff. House/Dance/Electronic: Moby, Goldfrapp, Ladytron. I've left a lot of stuff out, but it's late and it's snowing, o my love I must be going, the rivers are starting to freeze. (Bonus points for anyone who can name the lyric, which is from one of my all-time favorite tracks.)

Songs about myself: "I'm Too Sexy", Right Said Fred "Sexyback", Justin Timberlake Those are the only songs needed. Anything New Wave, especially New Order. How could you not like New Order, especially after hearing all 6 hours of "Blue Monday"? OK, it's not that long, but it sure seems like it.

Let's See... it can't be Blues? that's too optimistic for my life. Metal? Nah, not like that. Rock? No. Pop? That's pre-fab, thus far from my life. Soul? Not really. Classical: I feel I could make a good soundtrack from that.

Iron, what classical pieces do you like? I have The Flight of the Bumblebee in my list, but I also like the 1812 Overture, Beethoven's 5th and The Blue Danube.

Classical- Chopin's nocturnes, Verdi- La Traviata, most all of Rachmaninov. I also like the new Sheryl Crow cd, and Liz Phair is really good as well, especially the WhiteChocolateSpaceEgg disc.
