Smith-Wills To Be Independent Of Baseball

The Jackson Whatevers, a South Coast League expansion team, won't be coming to Smith-Wills Stadium this year, after all. A team in Florida won't be able to play this season because its stadium isn't ready, so the league contracted to four teams. The league, which has been bleeding money since it began in 2007, says it will field a team in Jackson in 2009. We'll see.

Man, that's a bummer. I submitted a team name to their contest. Guess it will be next year before I know who won.

Jackson seems to be cursed when it comes to sports. We were doing OK in the 80s and 90s with the Jackson Mets, which ended up becoming the Jackson Generals. There was the Jackson Bandits hockey team, which folded after a few seasons. I wish the city could've gotten its hands on the Mississippi Braves, which, from my understanding, was intended to be based in Jackson.

Well. while I'm sorry that the Braves didn't end up downtown, you should still check them out in Pearl. It is a first class operation, and I am positive that many of the folks that earn their paychecks there actually live, eat and spend their hard earned money in Jackson. A Braves game is a really fun experience- I'm really sorry that so many people don't support them because they happen to be in Pearl.
