In honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Jackson State University is hosting a "Prevention is Power" town hall meeting today (Feb. 7) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Jackson Medical Mall Community Room. Miss JSU Jasmin Searcy will moderate. Free rapid HIV testing will be provided by Crossroads Clinic, located on the third floor of the Jackson Medical Mall.

Invited panelists are Dr. Billy Ray Brown, clinical pharmacy specialist, G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery Medical Center; Kelly Brown, JSU student; Shirley Brown, HIV case manager, Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center; Juanita Davis, director, STD/HIV Prevention and Education Branch, Mississippi State Department of Health; Jill Fleming, community activist; Colby Michael, student, Jim Hill High School; Alice Tisdale, publisher, Jackson Advocate; Moderator: Miss Jackson State University Jasmin Searcy.

The event is presented by the Mississippi Urban Research Center at Jackson State University and co-sponsored by The Links Inc., LeFleur's Bluff Chapter. It is presented in collaboration with the Mississippi State Department of Health.

This is a good thing and I hope that the community will come out and support this event. One of the secretes of this State is the number of reported HIV/AIDS cases. What is also alarming is the adverage age of its victims. Sad but, true.

Also, keep in mind that Crossroads always has free rapid testing for HIV - something everyone should do :) Its just a prick of the finger. Not only is the average age alarming but also the number of people and the number of people that have no clue they are infected.
