Back from San Francisco

Todd and I are just back from several very busy days at two alternative newspaper conferences in San Francisco—one a Web conference and the other AAN West, which is the West Coast staff training for alternative newspapers such as ours. It was crazy busy—Todd gave a presentation at the Web conference (he's very popular there, being such a comedian and all), and I gave a diversity presentation at AAN West. Then we both led roundtable discussions at the Web conference. AND I attended a long AAN board meeting on Saturday. So when someone asked me this morning, "How was San Francisco," I can honestly answer, "I don't really know." We barely left our Japantown hotel (Kabuki; I don't recommend it; they are terrible with the basic details of stuff like replenishing coffee) except to have dinner.

But, as usual, it's invigorating to get out there and share what we've learned with the rest of the country, and get the positive feedback on what we're doing, especially with diversity and on the Web. Oh, and get this: We were encouraged to host an AAN national convention in Jackson in the next few years. Wouldn't that be something!?! We could really show off Jacktown's progress that way. Can't you just see the Boom suddenly marching into that crowd? They wouldn't know what hit them. ;-)

More soon. I'm way behind on everything, including catching up on the JFP blogosphere. So bear with me.

Thanks! It's always fun to leave, but it's wonderful to come home. Even to piles of stuff to do. ;-) Oh, and apparently, to springtime.

Hello from Maui, Hawaii! I enjoyed your talk a lot at the AAN West conference. It was interesting to hear about the different things that papers like ours work towards. San Francisco was really neat, but COLD! I too am way behind now that I'm back. Right before the conference we put out a special issue, then I came back to write lede, and now (before even going to print for this week) I'm scrambling to put out yet another special issue for Valentines day. How does this happen?? Aughhhhh! Anyways, it was great to meet you. Take care! Starr Begley Associate Editor Maui Time Weekly www.mauitime.com

It was great to meet you, too, Starr! I also love learning from other papers. I brought back a big to-do list—and immediately had to put out a paper. Of course, we put out our Valentine's "Fly" issue today, so next issue is more normal. It was cold in SF. Wet and cold. Of course, I was in the hotel most of the time. ;-) Stay in touch. I'd love to hear about your progress on what we talked about.
