High School Football: Meridian Shocks World

Meridian High pulled off the seemingly unbelievable, upsetting South Panola 26-20 in overtime Friday night in the MHSAA Class 5A state championship game. The Wildcats ended the Tigers' 89-game winning streak and run of five consecutive state titles. Give Clarion-Ledger writer Rod Walker credit: He predicted the upset.

Loisville, where I was born and 98% of my family still lives, won again for the 7th times. Seven trips down here and 7 wins. The quarterback Wraggs is my cousin. "We're winners." We didn't even need the star quarterback that got thrown off the team, but I hope he finds a good college to attend and rebound from the foolish decision he made that resulted in his downfall.

As close as some of South Panola's opponents came to knocking them off in the playoffs, I'm not really surprised about their loss. However, I wanted the streak to go on as long as possible in order to give Mississippi some publicity that's actually good.
