CQ Press has released its annual list of unhealthiest states—and Mississippi comes out the winner, taking out last year's winner, Louisiana. And the reasons couldn't be more direct:
Its title is well-earned: Mississippi has the highest rate of teenage births in the nation, the highest age-adjusted death rate, the highest infant mortality rate and the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases. It also has the largest precentage of obese adults and adults who do not exercise.

That old saying, "I can do bad on my own." Why not? Mississippians would be so much better off without the other 49 states looking down on us all of the time. The State of Mississippi. That sounds wonderful. Imagine how nice it would be. Overnight self-esteem for everyone. Talk about Stimulus.

Iron, I was just kidding about Haiti, though it's hard to imagine fainter praise. And of course, we do have a relatively robust health care system, though we pay far more for it than anyone else in the world. That is especially damaging in the poorest state in the country, namely Mississippi. Hello Laurel! I'm in Chicago. Say hello to Ms. JoAnne for me.
