The John Eaves gubernatorial campaign just sent around this statement responding to Barbour's comment during last week's debate that Eaves gave to fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign—clearing trying to play the liberal-femi-nazi card on Eaves:

JACKSON – At a debate on Mississippi's Gulf Coast last week, the only debate so far agreed to by Governor Haley Barbour, the Governor once again misled Mississippi voters by claiming that Democratic candidate John Eaves donated to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.
 
"I disagree with Hillary Clinton on a number of issues," said Eaves.  "We both believe in providing health care for children, but I'm pro-life, she's not.  I believe in prayer in school, she doesn't. I have never donated to Hillary Clinton.   Barbour always throws out facts and no one ever bothers to check them, but he needs to get them straight before claiming something about me that just isn't true."

John's father, also named John Arthur Eaves, has donated a total of $750 to Clinton's presidential campaign, and Clinton's filing with the Federal Election Commission reports his address as "753 North Old Canton Road" – home address of the candidate's father, not the candidate.  The Eaves campaign also provided a bookkeeping ledger receipt from the candidate's father's account at the family law firm recording a 2000 contribution of $1000 to Clinton's Senate campaign.  The 2000 FEC report lists the law firm address for "John Eaves," and the candidate always signs ledger entries in his account with "Jr."

I was in the audience for that debate. I don't think that the Hilary bashing played favorabably for Barbour. The President of USM is female and she was the opening speaker for the debate. The questions were asked by three white males. Barbour needs to X these Clinton support comments from his list because everyone AIN'T madd with Hilary. Some people are able to focus on the "Great Economy" during the Bill days and not so much on their personal lives.

I was in the audience too, and I agree with justjess that it didn't play well for Barbour. The audience appeared to applaud Eaves (and Clinton) after Barbour's snide comment.

Correction. Eaves is Pro Life and Pro Gun according to his commercials. He sounds like a Republican in Democrats clothing. I want to find a reason to support this campaign but can't get any enthusiasm going.

Actually if you go to the Mississippi Democrats website and look at their platform, Eaves regurgitates it verbatim: Mississippi Democrats Platform He is as much a democrat as I am republican. Basically pulling one of those switch-er-roos so he can get his name out there.

Said it on another thread, and I'll say it here- write in "Cindy" on the ballot. Send a message to the Democrats that we will no longer tolerate them fielding a Republican, and send a message to the Republicans that we will no longer tolerate politicians lining their own pocket. BTW, I'm married to Cindy, and can vouch for her integrity; but when she finds out that she is running for office, she will probably kill me... 8-)

ignore the gun /abortion stuff(the issues have been settled by the legislature and the federal courts) eaves is for lowering the grocery tax,dramatically increasing teacher pay,and broadening health care coverage for children.eaves will not profiteer from government like our current governor is doing at the rate of $30k each month from his lobbying firm.eaves is not bad to drink and keeps his weight under control.

I really have doubts that he is "for" anything. He seems to do and say what will get his face out there without backing anything up. Regarding the health care - most of his law practice has been suing nursing homes, so in a sense, he's the one causing insurance rates to sky-rocket. I think he just likes seeing his face on TV. I must say his make-up was fabulous on that last comercial he was in, so I can see it.

i find his kids care plan to be substantive and modeled after a plan that has been implemented in illinois.if a nursing home is negligent in caring for an elderly person then liability for damages should attach. eaves is the democratic nominee for governor and he is expected to go head to head on television with commercials, just like haley barbour is doing.

Okay let's see. The legislature has taken care of the gun control and abortion issues but we've seen these constantly come back for debate. In the city of Jackson lowering a grocery tax is just going to further erode our dwindling tax base. Hey I know it's probably not the popular opinion but it's mine. Teacher pay and health care coverage I can get behind any day of the week. I'll do more research on the health care plan because frankly it looks like this to me. Barbour profits from his lobbying firm, and Eaves will profit from the health care issues simply because of what he does for a living. Just breaking things to the lowest common denominator. As far as the television is concerned I agree he should be out there campaigning his tail off. It started a long time ago before he announced his intent to run, with the morals and family values commercials. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to support the democrat in the election but I would really like to be able to feel that I'm not being duped. Over and over again in the black community we get courted no sooner than the preacher says the final amen, the marriage is annulled. Just want to see if he'll dance "with the one who brung him"

eaves is solid on bread and butter issues and he is a loyal Democrat. the sales tax bill that sailed through both houses of the legislature contained a guarentee to municipalities that their share of the sales tax would not be reduced. i.e. cities would receive the same amount of diversion they now receive under existing law.as governor eaves will no longer be allowed to practice law(governor is a fulltime job) and i dont see how he directly profits from school kids getting health care.

While he may no longer practice once he becomes a sitting Governor, his law firm will still continute to operate, right? We could be faced with more of these blind trust issues and this is one time I want to be sure I know where I'm standing. On the sales tax bill, even though the municipalities would receive the same amount of diversion they now receive, wouldn't that be reduced simply because fewer taxes would be collected? I'm not being difficult here, I really do want to know the answers to the questions.

I went and looked at the Democratic website. Eaves does repeat most of this verbatim but I did notice that when he gets to the part about marriage there is a slight difference. The site says "we believe in the sancitity of marriage between a man and a woman. Eaves says "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman" The difference? The Democratic platform says a Democrat believes in the sanctity of marriage between and man and woman. While this is just political hedging it doesn't rule out same sex marriage. What John Jr. says specifically is he believes marriage is between a man and a woman. There's no room here for same sex marriage. These are the little things that are bothering me.
