Laurel Mayor Is Endorsing Eaves, NOT Barbour

In a turnabout, the Democratic mayor of Laurel is denying reports that he and Barbour were planning to jointly announce his endorsement of the governor. The Associated Press is reporting that Barbour's campaign had told them that, but the Laurel mayor is now denying:

The Democratic mayor of Laurel says he is not endorsing Republican Gov. Haley Barbour for re-election, despite the Barbour campaign's statement that the endorsement was to be announced Thursday. "I've always been a Democrat, nothing but a Democrat and I remain a Democrat," Mayor Melvin Mack told The Associated Press.

Barbour campaign spokesman Brian Perry said in a separate interview Thursday that there had been a misunderstanding. Perry called AP on Wednesday and said Barbour and Mack were having a news conference at 4:15 p.m. Thursday to announce that Mack would endorse the governor.

Instead, Mack is endorsing Democratic challenger John Arthur Eaves on Friday.

It sure does sound like there is massive confusion within the governor's ranks.
