Jackson State lost to Delta State Saturday. I was shocked when I saw the tape run across ESPN. Tougaloo also beat Jackson State once back in the Sixties before our footbal team folded, and the old guys still talk about this to this day. It was likely a pure accident and before JSU became a powerhouse. I'm glad JSU played Delta State though. Mississippi State made me an instant fan of theirs when they agreed to play Alcorn in the late 70's, in a basketball game, when Alcorn had great players including Larry Smith, who played in the NBA over a decade and coached in the same for several years including winning an NBA championship as an assistant coach . As you may or may not know, Alcorn won the game, although all 5 starter for MSU got drafted into the NBA. Yes, MSU was a very good team, too. Ole Miss to this day is scared to play Southern Mississippi for fear of getting their tails whipped.

SWAC football is just a totally different brand. Not trying to start anything; it's just an objective fact. The emphasis is on individual athletes, scoring, and all-around entertainment. Which is why the SWAC puts more players in the NFL than any other D1AA conference, but can't compete in the D1AA playoffs. DSU, by contrast, is about taking good-but-not-great athletes and turning them into a well oiled machine that hits you in the mouth every single down. In short, anybody who thought this was going to be a close game probably also thought the bands would be about evenly matched.

Excellent, LTG. I was worried that JSU could lose. I've seen other so-called smaller schools beat other SWAC teams. It seemed to me, in every loss to those smaller schools, the SWAC coaches and players didn't think they could lose or had to be ready for a different kind of coaching style. I even saw a small nameless school in Texas completely fool a nameless SWAC defense concerning which player actually had the ball. The ball carrier walked about 20 yards into the end zone, and made me mad enough to fight the whole defense. I was fooled too, but I wasn't playing.
