I got something in e-mail about this and I felt compelled to post about it. Seems legit coming from the Humane Society. Do with this information what you will. If you do eat seafood, though, maybe focus on home-grown catfish for a few months...

Has anyone ever seen footage of Green Peace in tiny schooners chasing down whaling ships and getting between their harpoon and the water? It is way intense. Nowadays they have helicopters and nice speed boats to help keep the peace - but watching those old 70's clips of them fighting for our whales ... breath taking. It is interesting how distanced we are from the slaughter going on in the world today. From the animals we eat to the animals we decorate with ... and even animal products we take in capsules to stave off disease ... we have no real concept of how that animal is killed and how it affects our greater community. You would have thought that polar bears drowning because there are fewer glaciers and ice chunks would have raised a few eye brows... perhaps even been a wake up call to change our energy consumption habits ... Unfortunately it is another world to many of us; a world we don't feel any connection to or responsibility for. The people making a difference are in boats getting in the way of that harpoon. i garuntee there are soldiers up there trying to do something for those penguins. We should do everything we can to supplement their efforts. Alas...how does one do that. i care about the situation and can wax ecstatic on the issue ~ but i don't know how to really do anything about it besides send money somewhere. We need to change the greater situation that commodifies our world and the things in it (include people). Cooperation with each other and the natural processes which sustain our life realizes security for greater than a store of food and water.
