Tigers In NCAA, Others Must Wait

Jackson State is going to the NCAA Tournament after defeating Mississippi Valley State 81-71 in the SWAC Tournament championship game on Saturday. Trey Johnson scored 33 points to lead the Tigers to their first NCAA berth in seven years. He also moved past pill-popping NBA great Lindsey Hunter to become JSU's single-season scoring leaders. Tiger fans are invited to a reception on campus today starting at 4 p.m. There they can watch the selection show (5 p.m., Ch. 12) and find out which play-in team or No. 1 seed the Tigers will get to play.

Don't weep too much for Valley. The Delta Devils are going to the NIT, thanks to winning the SWAC regular-season title.

The JSU women lost to Prairie View, 68-62 in the SWAC final.

Meanwhile, Mississippi State and Ole Miss both lost in the SEC Tournament semifinals. The Bulldogs' and Rebels' chances of going to the NCAA appear slim. And the NIT might not call, either.

Hooray for Jackson State for going to the dance, but they will be do-se-doed by Florida on Friday night. Ole Miss and MSU will go to the NIT, but USM, despite a 20-win season season, will stay at home, yet again, for the postseason.

Very happy for Jackson State, and I hope they cream Florida. I'll happily cheer for them unless they play my beloved Wildcats. Then I'll have to step aside. :)

USM played several NAIA schools. That's RPI suicide. Both State and umiss would've had to have won the whole SECT to get in. If upig, with over 20 wins and a strong RPI/SOS, got a 12 seed we would've had to earn the automatic bid.
