ALERT: Prison Escapee May Be in Jackson

Terry S. Thomas, 50, was seen Thursday in downtown Jackson, the release said.

Per a release posted on The Clarion-Ledger's site:

Thomas is serving an eight-year sentence for 4 counts of grand larceny.

He has a grey beard and multiple tattoos on both arms and his chest, including a snake rattler on the right arm and the name "Nina" with a cross on the upper left arm, the release said. He is about 5'8" and weighs 160 pounds.

Anyone with any information or sightings of Thomas should contact local law enforcement or the Mississippi Department of Corrections at (662) 745-6611 or (601) 573-5953, or Flowood Police at (601) 624-8646.

In this instance, it seems that the better public interest would have been served if the C-L article had specified the suspect's race. Maybe there's something I'm missing.

Uh, yeah, I think that would be helpful information to have... I ridicule papers for their "Be on the Lookout for a Young Black Male" coverage, and I think they should leave race out of stories if that's the only information they have ("A black male mugged a jogger in Eastover yesterday...") because there's no sensible way to respond to it ("Officer! I saw a black male in Eastover--I think he might be your guy!"), but in cases where race is actually a useful part of the description, it should be provided. And call me a cynic, but when race isn't specified, I assume the media is talking about a white. Just because it's hard to imagine sensationalistic coverage that includes the phrase "Witnesses described a white male..." Cheers, TH
