As a public service, I am announcing my candidacy for re-election to represent the 72nd District in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Also, in the spirit of equal time, I have an opponent in the August Democratic Primary. Her name is Kimberly Campbell and she is an attorney here in Jackson. I wish her well and I look forward to a fun, issue-oriented campaign. As far as what is going on in the Capitol, word is that we are getting ready to deal with HB 247, which is the tobacco/grocery tax bill, today…

...so much for after-Valentine love. We will go in at 2pm today and will probably be here for a while. I am going to work for a compromise of 50 cents increase in the tobacco tax and to allow the muncipalities to receive all of the tax revenue once we reduce it to 2 percent. If the compromise fails, I will vote for the bill as it is, with a dollar increase on tobacco.

UPDATE: The compromise amendment I offered only received 38 votes. So much for compromise. The bill itself received 91 votes, including mine, which would make it veto proof in the House.

Good work on that bill, Rep. Fleming! FWIW, Kimberly Campbell has been mentioned in the JFP before--not as a candidate, but in a context that makes me think she has a lot of personal integrity. Anyone willing to stand up to the Melton administration, and resign rather than give up on her convictions, is potential legislature material from where I'm standing. Cheers, TH

Thanks, TH. I did read that article and came away with a similar impression. All I can do is offer myself to the voters in my district and see if they will alow me to serve them another four years. I do not know Ms. Campbell personally, I do know that she is an attorney for a board I serve on, so that makes it interesting. Anyway, now I know what I will be doing until August.
