Del Monte is now on the list of recalled pet food. The long list now includes Pounce Cat Treats, Meaty Morsels and Jerky Dog Treats.

Comment: Another alternative that I try to practice as much as possible: BARF. BARF stands for bones and raw food. My dogs are never happier than when eating their food in its most natural of states -- raw. From eggs, vegetables, and fruit to chicken, deer and elk, they love it. Of course, it helps if you know hunters that can provide lots of raw leftovers from their kills and have a freezer capable of storing lots of meaty, raw bones and, er, organs. After increasing the amount of raw foods, I almost immediately noticed a difference in their weight, energy, and teeth (pearly white). My dog's favorite non-meat has to be eggs (shell and all) and apples.

Comment: Someone with Rainbow Whole Foods told me their pet food sales have increased. Which is good. The food generally excludes byproducts. And my feline daughter loves it.

Comment: Knol, isn't there a risk of salmonella in the eggs or bacteria in the raw meat? OR doesn't it affect dogs the same way?

Comment: From my research, there is risk... Of course, it's interesting to question where the risk is these days with all the food being recalled. I've been feeding my pooches raw food mixed with a high-quality dry food for several years and had no issues at all. If anything, I'd say their health is better. The way I see it: dogs were designed to eat these foods in the wild and still have the same makeup and prefer it. They eat it naturally and have the tolerance for bugs and bacteria that would normally make a human very sick. I've never noticed any adverse reactions to raw foods (though there are definite no-nos such as grapes/raisins and small bones that are cooked). OK... The only adverse reaction would be the growling and barking when my two boys get a massive amount of bones and want to own them all. ;-) I like to feed them bones in large quantities so they can hide them and allow them to become "ripe" and more nutritious. Of course, this causes a lot of territorial bickering over who "owns" the bones and more importantly the marrow. God, I'm such a country boy. ;-)

Comment: This situation with the pet food is very disturbing. What a senseless loss for those people who have lost their pets due to contaminated food. I am one of those who switched to Rainbow Co-op for cat food after all of this surfaced. I thought I was doing good to read labels and purchase cat food without by-products from Petsmart. Well, no! The brand (not the food) I normally purchase showed up on the recall list. Can't help but wonder that if we are having this kind of trouble with our animal's food, are even greater problems are on the horizon with human food too?

Comment: I'm afraid to gives bones to dogs. I heard that there's a chance that the bone fragments could lacerate the colon. My mom just bought food for her dog and my cat and fortunately the brands she bought are not involved in the recall. However, since new brands are being added to the list regularly, I'm keeping an eye on the little critters to make sure they don't get sick. I've considered buying all-natural food or making the food myself. I just wonder if I have enough cash on hand to do that. There's a story that will air on Inside Edition today about a woman who ate dog food to get her dog to eat it, and both of them got sick. Before this, I thought about poor people who eat dog food because they can't afford to buy meat. I wonder how many of them have gotten sick and have been too embarrased to let anyone know how it happened.

Comment: This is really a tragedy that pet owners have loss their animals secondary to food poisoning. It really makes you wonder just how safe are the canned foods and other "treats" we eat,
