According to The Clarion-Ledger. The question is, where the @#$% is the police chief, and why isn't she out in front telling the public what she is doing to deal with the crime crisis? Our last chief held public briefings once a week and special ones when things got really rough; where is this chief hiding? What is her plan?

We must remember that Frank Melton appointed a Chief that had no experience in this type of management position. The sad thing is that there were people on the police force that could have done a good job. She was confirmed by the Council and there was no outrage from the public. We have what we have and that is a City running on automatic pilot. Sherline Anderson does not have, in my opinion, the knowledge base to deal with the City's criminal problems. Frank has kept her on a tight leash and the Lynda Maple guidelines are as foreign as the Koran.

If Melton had picked a more qualified chief, I'm betting that chief would be in the exact same situation--and that the city would be in the exact same situation--because Anderson is quite obviously being kept silent and on a short leash. Cheers, TH

I agree with Panther. Even if the "teflon Don" that we have for a mayor stays, we need some direction in the police department and the fire department as well. Anderson has not panned out. Melton did not pan out either when he tried to play police chief. It is becoming more and more evident that Melton's attempt to undo the last administration's crime fighting tactics has blown up in his face and we the citizens are suffering the consequences.

If Melton had hired a real police chief, she would have resigned long before now. A real police chief must have a certain professional virtue. I hesitate to use the word "honor," but the truth is that if your boss won't let you do your job the way it needs to be done, your integrity is on the line. We are miles and miles away from that chief, however. This chief is presiding over the worst spike in crime in at least 20 years, yet she is silent. There are no bold initiatives. There are not even empty initiatives designed to muddy the waters. This is a chief who does not hold press conferences. It is almost as if she is just waiting for the roof to fall in--the thought of keeping it from falling in, of taking aggressive, coordinated action, never even passes through her lips. The ship is taking on water, and the captain has locked herself in her cabin. Meanwhile, we all watch Melton as if he's some hypnotist's medallion. When crime was going down, the media shrieked about how bad crime was. Now, the shrieking pretty much sounds the same. Way to go, guys.

Agreed. There is no "crime-fighting" going on here. Anderson may be a good cop—people say that—but she is an abysmal chief, at least under this mayor. The comparison with the last chief, who had plenty of honor and confidence and experience, is laughable. I liked her as a person when I was on the MObile Command Center, but I saw little to recommend her as chief. She honestly seemed like her purpose was to babysit Melton. The other cops called her "mama" behind her back because, it seemed, they couldn't do certain things when she was there with them.

Too bad about the Stew Pot. I participate as a server several times during the year. It is a great experience and it has so much support. Stealing from the food kitchen is akin to streling from a church. There is just something that is too far wrong with this act.
