Hinds usually does go blue; what depresses me is that, with the decent statewide percentage Fleming got despite the lack of a campaign presence, visibility, party support, and a meaningful platform, it looks like Lott was obviously beatable this year. Wayne Dowdy must surely be kicking himself right now for hinging everything on whether or not Lott chose to run. Cheers, TH

You know, I have seriously considered more than once running as a Democrat myself for U.S. House District 3 just so Jim Giles doesn't get a double-digit chunk of the vote every two years (which he's obviously getting primarily from folks who have absolutely no idea what his platform is, see him next on the ballot, and vote against Pickering). I'd have zero chance of (and zero interest in) actually winning, but at least there'd be somebody in the race. Of course, I'd rather it be someone who's actually interested in having a political future, and I can't be bothered--but if nobody else runs at all, I might consider it just to put a name on the ballot above Jim Giles. Re the race against Lott: Mike Moore must not be all that tough of a candidate after all, to only be a viable contender for the U.S. Senate if it's an open seat. The message the Mississippi Democratic Party is basically sending is that it considers both of our Senate seats and one of our four House seats completely unbeatable. Even the most optimistic shill Republican apologist wouldn't make that claim. But what do you expect when the state party chair endorsed friggin' Trent Lott? Cheers, TH
