Join the JFP for Goodbye Karaoke for Lynette Hanson

The Jackson Free Press and friends will gather tonight at Hal & Mal's in the Brewpub/Patio starting at 7 p.m. to bid Lynette Hanson farewell as she and her mama Edna head to P-town (our new nickname for Portland, Ore., which has no idea how lucky they are). Her famous chef sons will also be in the house. So come sing a tune to our lovely Lynette. We're going to miss her so!

We'll also be celebrating the JFP's amazing showing in the AAN awards this year, so come raise a glass and croon a tune with us. See y'all there.

A corvette!?! Ooo, what color? Knol, Duane should bring his Camaro. Anybody else got a muscle car we can line up outside in Lynette's honor?

I have no idea. Its Emily's man's...which is why I said she didn't know I was driving it yet. ;) She said it scared her. I told her me driving it would scare her more...but in that fun way! ;) I love to drive a fast car...especially if they are a stick. LOVE. IT. I'm such a boy that way.

Ah, memories. I haven't driven a Vette since college. It was white, as I recall. Yeah, I love me a good fast ride, too, and I drove like Emma Peel. The best car I ever drove was the Porsche Boxster that Todd and I test-drove for a weekend for a piece he wrote for an uppity magazine in NYC. Out of all the "luxury" cars he drove, this was the one, and the only one I insisted on driving, despite his assurance to them that I wouldn't. Hah! What a great car. It was charcoaly silver with that burnt orangy interior -- the orange was mod, not garish. Vera, vera nice.

You're appreciate this, Ali. If there is anythign that pisses me off about women is when they can't (a) change a damn tire or (b) drive a stick. I can't tell you how many young women I've plopped myself into a car and taught her to drive a stick. Imagine not knowing how to drive that damn Porsche when the opportunity presented itself. Life is too short not to know how to do certain things. Live, girlfriends.

This is true. 'Course, I'm from the Delta. So I learned to drive a stick at thirteen in an old 60-something red Ford truck that went dead at stop lights. I kept it to the fields after that. It wasn't until some well known lawyer in town got tanked up enough to put me in the driver's seat of his very expensive Mercedes that I truly learned to appreciate a fast German car. ;)

Everytime you say "I'm from the Delta," I think of Diane Keaton in "Manhattan." Of course, I use "I'm from Neshoba County" in much the same way. I have a similar story about a diplomat in Georgetown ... Egyptian, I think ... but I'll like it lie. 8-D

"I feel like we're in a Noel Coward play. Someone should be making martinis. " Tell Todd I'm drinking herbal tea and practicing scales....

I just have to say that I had a blast tonight! This was the most fun I have had all year. Lynette, I am going to miss you more than you will ever know. Thank you for getting to know me, for looking past my sometimes cool exterior and giving me the benefit of the doubt. Your mother and you deserve the best, and I know your sons will make sure you get it.

Lynette, I get very nostalgic thinking about those long, long nights working at the JFP's former headquarters in Belhaven, editing copy by the light of those tiny lamps. We froze in the winter and sweated in the summer. And occasionally, a cat would jump up on your lap or keyboard to see how things were going. The current, more-corporate digs in the JFP Tower might not be as funky but they're definitely more comfortable. Good luck to you and yours on the Left Coast. I'll think of you when I'm rummaging through the book pile.

I have so much to say, so I'll make it two parts. Part One Lynette and her family do deserve the best. I want to be her when I grow up, and I'm working on it one trait at a time. She always remembered everyone's name, and she was SO EXCITED to see every person she met. Meet her once, and she's your friend. I want to be more like that. I will take a little of her determination as well.

Part Two The car was yellow and it scared my pants off because I knew if I HURT that car in anyway, while he may not ever say it, I know that there would be a part of my fiance' forever who would think, "That bitch hurt my car!" We are trading it in for a Volvo. Bless our hearts. So I drove TO Hal and Mal's like an old lady. Mini vans revved their engines at stop lights, and then beat my ass. I like to think that I gave someone an erection or some other form of happiness by kicking corvette butt on lakeland drive. Driving home however was a different story. After an evening of singing with no liquor in my system, I had regained my I-don't-give-a-damn. Thank you Lynette. I've been living on your borrowed courage for a while too ;)

Good bye, Lynette. Glad to have met you. The whole state of Oregon is pretty. I drove through it 3 years ago on my way from San Francisco to Seattle. You'll miss Mississippi. There is something about this place that no other place can fill. Still not exactly sure what it is though. Mrs. Carter told me she saw you yesterday.

Agreed all—FABULOUS party last night. What a crowd. What madness. What crazy songs. I don't even know which one was my favorite, although C.A. starting it off serenading Lynette with Eminem certainly set a certain place. ;-) Her sons were excellent as well—I just don't think anybody does karaoke quite like a JFP crowd! We will miss Lynette so, but I'm so happy for her. They're going to have a wonderful family life out in Portland, you can just see it. And it gives us a good reason to go there more often!

Donna, that Eminem song has me hooked. I can see myself in that song---- went out and bought the soundtrack so I will be more prepared next time. Last night was hilarious for me. I enjoy laughing at myself from time to time. Even I take myself too serious. Nothing like an off-key round or two of karaoke to humble you. (smile)
