JACKSON—-State Representative Erik Fleming, D-Clinton, a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate, today released this statement:

"I am glad to hear that Trent Lott has decided to join me in running for the US Senate in 2006. I believe it will be a spirited campaign, and one I hope will address the real issues confronting Mississippi.

"I think now Mr. Lott can explain on the campaign trail why Mississippi is in the same shape it was in 1988. He can explain why our beloved state is still the poorest in the nation, with the lowest median income in the country and over 25 percent of its population in poverty. He can explain why he thinks another six years of his service will yield any different results.

"My campaign is about Mississippi's future. During my eight years in the Mississippi Legislature, I have been a tireless champion for the people of this state, not being concerned about what leadership position I had, but what I could do to make life better for all Mississippians. As your next United States Senator, I intend to continue pushing for the agenda of empowerment that I started in 1999.

"I believe that the voters of Mississippi will make a decision in the upcoming months based on one question: Do we settle for what we have or do we want a better future? I represent that better future and in the coming months I will make that case to the citizens of Mississippi."

Rep. Fleming, Let me just be the first to say hurray and good luck to you! One question, will you have the "clout" that Mr. Lott does? (if he has much anymore...) He cannot rest on his record for what he has done in Mississippi lately. It is a known tragedy on the Gulf. Whether he has a house there or not. I look forward to the campaign. I would say more , but it would not be polite. ha. Let the games begin! I am so glad you are going for it. Sinceramente. You are the perfect foil.

Thanks, sunshine. For those who would make the argument about clout, one could quickly look at Barack Obama. Just by being elected, he has received status as a player in the process, and he won an open seat. Just imagine what I would have coming in after beating a former Majority Leader?

Barack was, in my opinion given a lot of that off the start. Lott isn't in as bad a shape as the media would have us believe, in my opinon. Of course, we here in Mississippi always like a good political fight. :D

FYI: Someone named Jim Allen O'Keefe filed to run as a Democrat Friday. All I know about him is: He is from Long Beach, MS and that he is a 56-year-old white male. The District Attorney from Harrison County helped him get in the race. So now I have to beat two people from the Gulf Coast to get the opportunity to serve in the US Senate. The deadline is March 1 to qualify, so more folks may jump in. Stay tuned for that. Thanks, Donna for the link on the article. So, as a journalist, what did you think?
